Not Because of Genes, This Causes Obesity in Children

Most people will usually answer "genetic factors" when asked about the causes of obesity in children. It is not wrong indeed, because genetic and family history of being fat also determines the condition of a child's body. However, in fact, genetics is not the only factor triggering obesity. So, besides being genetic, why do most obese children have obese parents too?

Is obesity in children inherited from parents?

Genetic alias can be said as a risk factor that is quite closely related to the incidence of obesity in children. A child who has a family history of obesity, has a much higher risk for obesity compared to children of parents whose weight is ideal.

On this basis, there is a widespread assumption in society that when one or both partners are obese, they will definitely give birth to obese children as well. This is as if the price is dead and cannot be handled anymore, for reasons of heredity is the cause of obesity in children. In fact, genetics is not the only determinant of a child's chances of being obese.

Parents' eating habits can also be "passed down" to children

Conscious or not, the lifestyle of parents, eating habits that are applied to children from a young age, and the tendency of children to imitate the behavior of their parents are all the factors that cause obesity in children who are often ruled out.

The theory was concluded after researchers from the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research found that children and adolescents in the age range of 2-17 years prefer to eat fruit and vegetables because they see their parents do it.

Conversely, children and adolescents whose parents often consume fast food and soft drinks tend to imitate these behaviors, as quoted from the Live Science page.

In short this way, what is a parent's favorite will indirectly be used as a role model by children, whether it's good or bad. Children only think that everything that is done and implemented by their parents is something that deserves to be imitated.

Susan H. Babey, as one of the researchers added that the lifestyle, eating patterns of children, along with all types of food is a daily family habit that starts at home.

Not surprisingly, what parents do and teach in their children's daily lives, will continue to carry over to the outside of the home even until the child grows up. That is why, the surrounding environment also occupies one of the causes of obesity in children. So the cause of obesity in children is not as simple as "because of heredity".

The key, apply a healthy lifestyle

Now you may have better understood that genetics is not a major factor causing obesity in children. The reason is, all the food and drinks consumed, as well as daily lifestyle can directly influence so that later it develops into obesity. Especially if you inherit the triggering gene for obesity in the family.

Unhealthy lifestyles will easily collaborate with the obesity gene. As a result, you and your child have many times the chance to become obese. You certainly do not want this bad habit to get worse, right?

It's best not to immediately change your child's daily habits, because they will also continue to imitate your behavior. As a solution, start with yourself and your partner first. By doing so, children become more motivated when they see the role of their parents who support this positive change.

Try to sort out which foods are good, which ones should be reduced, to which ones should be eliminated altogether.

Give portions that fit the child's needs, not too much or too little. In addition, set limits on snacking rules in a day if your family members love snacking.

In fact, you can schedule a joint exercise at least once a week. Not just keeping your body in shape, all family members will also feel more energized to achieve ideal body weight.
